Three Types of EV Charging in North America

You have three EV charging connector options to choose from. Each level utilizes a different kind of EV charging connector for plugging in your Honda in Aurora.

1. Level 1 Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): A standard grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet commonly found in your home and garage is the slowest type of charging. You could charge an EV in 24 to 48 hours with this method, but it is unwieldy at best.
2. Level 2 for Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 Charging needs a professionally installed charging device in your garage. This can charge your EV in 8 to 12 hours, depending on the vehicle you choose. You’ll need to hire a licensed electrician.
3. Level 3 Public Charging: Also known as DC Fast Charging, this specialized system delivers electricity to get 80% of full charge in around 30 minutes.

Home EV Charging Connector

For efficient charging in your home or garage, an electrician will install a specialized EV charging connector. This type of EV charging connector has five pins (instead of prongs). It allows higher amounts of electricity to flow, and it is completely safe for charging your EV at home overnight.

Combined Charging System (CCS) EV Charging Connector

DC Fast Public Charging stations have CCS electrical connectors. These types of EV charging connectors work for many automakers, including Honda. You can find CCS locations using your vehicle’s GPS or apps on your smartphone. A CCS station offers two additional pins (seven pins total) to manage the higher amounts of electricity flowing into your EV or plug-in hybrid (PHEV). 

How to Choose the Right Types of EV Charging Connectors

Your EV manufacturer will determine the correct types of EV charging connectors you require. Some brands have specialized DC Public Charging stations that can’t be used with other vehicles. You might see that some automakers offer free public charging for a year or two as an incentive to purchase a new EV. Other manufacturers will pay for your home charging box, but they won’t cover the labor costs from the electrician.

With some simple planning, you can determine what type of EV charging connector you’ll use the most. Are you out of town a lot where you’ll need public charging stations? Do you expect to stay within a few miles of your Parker home? Understand that DC Fast Charging will likely be more expensive than home charging, but it’s still less expensive than gasoline.
