For years, Honda and Toyota have battled each other for top spots in certain sectors in the automotive industry, and the midsize SUV market is one of them. For the 2020 model year, both automakers provide the Pilot and Highlander, respectively. Both three-row vehicles with the ability to seat up to eight people, the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander are as suitable for the great outdoors as they are as daily commuting machines. However, that’s where the similarities primarily end. Here are a few major reasons why you should go with a 2020 Pilot over the 2020 Highlander.
Fuel Economy – 2020 Honda Pilot
When a vehicle comes to a complete stop, the engine does not shut down. Rather, it continues running. This is referred to as idling. Since the engine is still on, fuel that could have been consumed when the vehicle is in motion is otherwise wasted. Eventually, automakers came up with idle stop—or auto start-stop—technology to eliminate idling, which consequently boosts the vehicle’s fuel economy.
Both the 2020 Honda Pilot and the 2020 Toyota Highlander have large, robust 3.5-liter V6 engines that provide great acceleration ability. However, the Pilot’s V6 has idle stop technology, while that of the Highlander doesn’t.

Indeed, upgrade to the Highlander XLE or the Limited, and that passenger volume is reduced to 139.1 cubic feet. And with 136.1 cubic feet, the Platinum offers the least amount of passenger volume on the Highlander.
It’s the same with cargo volume. The Highlander offers 16 cubic feet of space between the third row and the liftgate. On the Pilot, it’s 16.5 cubic feet. Maximum cargo volume can be achieved on either vehicle by folding down the second and third rows of seats. However, while the Highlander provides 84.3 cubic feet, the Pilot provides up to 109.2 cubic feet (on the EX, EX-L, and Touring).
Interior Speaker System – 2020 Honda Pilot dealer
Honda includes an in-car PA system on all trims of the 2020 Pilot. Called CabinTalk, this system enables you to talk to rear-seat passengers by using the Honda-provided wireless headphones and third-row wired headphones. If rear-seat passengers are watching video content from the optional Blu-ray entertainment system, CabinTalk will pause the video and sound to enable communication between the front and the rear. Unlike the Pilot, the 2020 Highlander does not even have a PA system as an option, let alone a standard feature.
