The Honda Pilot and the Nissan Pathfinder are two of the midsize crossover SUVs offered for the 2020 model year. Both are three-row vehicles with large engines designed to provide remarkable acceleration ability, but that’s where the similarities—for the most part—end. The Honda Pilot is much younger, having debuted in the early 2000s and still fresh into its third production cycle. By contrast, the Nissan Pathfinder, around since the 1980s, feels a bit long in the tooth as it continues its fourth production cycle. Here are a few reasons why the 2020 Honda Pilot is a better choice than the Nissan Pathfinder.
Exterior – 2020 Honda Pilot
Both the 2020 Pilot and the 2020 Pathfinder use MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link design in the rear to form their independent suspensions. However, while the Pilot’s ride is cushioned regardless of driving surface quality, that of the Pathfinder is firm and can feel considerably jittery on bumpy and rocky roads. The lack of smoothness can be most felt on a Pathfinder with larger, 20-inch wheels. (Eighteen-inch wheels are standard.) For maximum absorption of road imperfections, you just might be better off with the Pilot.

Granted, both the 2020 Honda Pilot and the 2020 Nissan Pathfinder provide three rows of seats. However, on the Pilot, the bench-style seat in the second row is designed to accommodate three people, while a pair of captain’s seats are standard on the Pathfinder to seat two people. As a result, the Pilot has a maximum occupancy of eight people while the Pathfinder can accommodate up to seven people. (On the Pilot, you would need to go with the upper-level Elite and Black Edition trim to get captain’s seats, and the Touring offers the choice between a seven-seater and an eight-seater.)

The state in which the engine is running when the vehicle is not in motion is referred to as idling. That means that the engine is consuming fuel that it does not necessarily need to consume. Over the past few years, however, automakers have included auto start-stop technology in their engines. This means that the engine will automatically stop running when you come to a complete stop and automatically turns back on when you ease off the brake pedal. As a result, engine idling is eliminated and fuel economy is greatly improved.
Interestingly, both the 2020 Pilot and the 2020 Pathfinder run on huge, 3.5-liter V6 engines. But it is the Pilot V6 that has auto start-stop technology while the Highlander V6 doesn’t.

The 2020 Pilot has at least one feature that is missing on the 2020 Pathfinder: a PA system. This system, which is called CabinTalk, enables the driver to talk to rear-seat passengers. This is accomplished by using the front-row wireless headphones and third-row wired headphones provided by Honda. If rear-seat passengers are watching video content from the Blu-ray entertainment system, CabinTalk will pause the video and sound to enable communication.
