Honda Makes 5 of the Top 15 American-Made Cars

With COVID-19 affecting most of the U.S., “buying local” has become one of 2020’s most popular themes. This is especially true in the car market, as approximately 40% of American car shoppers would specifically choose to buy a U.S.-made vehicle from an American car dealership—up 15% from 2019.

Still, those who seem to embrace American-made cars aren’t very knowledgeable on the subject, as just 26% of all shoppers recognize that most Honda models are made here on American soil. In fact, the Cars.com AMI (American-Made Index) report shows that Honda makes five of the top 15 AMI models—beating out standard American car manufacturers like Chevrolet (3 of top 15), Ford (1) and Tesla (3).

#5: Honda Odyssey

Built in Alabama, the Honda Odyssey has long been known as one of the best minivans in the country. It offers heaps of all-purpose features—the HondaVAC is still an incredible parent-friendly invention, even though it’s been copied by other vans—more than 140 cubic feet of cargo volume, and a handy sliding second-row seat.

This year, the 2021 Honda Odyssey adds an all-new, Honda-first Rear Seat Reminder System, which notifies parents to check the back seat before exiting the vehicle. That inclusion should keep the new Odyssey in the IIHS TSP+ category.

#6: Honda Ridgeline

The Alabama-built Honda Ridgeline is known as one of the most versatile, capable and innovative American trucks in the world. Perfect for tailgating or a drive-in, Ridgeline’s bed features a dual-hinged tailgate, a built-in 7.3-cubic-foot cooler with drain plug, a unique lay-flat bed design, and an available 400-watt power outlet (bring your electric heater).

For 2021, the Ridgeline gets a redesign, making our favorite truck even better. Among the changes: A standard 280-hp V6 married to a 9-speed transmission, an available i-VTM4 AWD system, class-topping passenger comfort and rear legroom, an upgraded Display Audio system, and a few other niceties.

#7: Honda Passport

As the newcomer of the group, the Honda Passport has defied all odds to become one of the most popular AWD SUVs in its class. Hailing from the same Lincoln, Alabama factory as the Ridgeline and Odyssey, Passport offers Ridgeline’s rugged styling and V6 engine, along with Odyssey’s convenient features, like tri-zone climate control and a power liftgate.

However, the new Honda Passport is its own beast, one who’s capable of tackling the untamed road with aplomb. Its torque-vectoring AWD system with Intelligent Traction Management enables you to handle dirt, mud, snow, and ice without issue. (Its large, all-season tires help in that regard, too.) And you can easily tow up to 5,000 pounds.

#13: Honda Pilot

When a family SUV is needed, the 8-passenger Honda Pilot knows no competition. Its well-built interior offers a variety of seating options, numerous first-tier pieces of technology, and a Rear Entertainment System for the kids to enjoy. Plus, with its CabinTalk feature, you can become an actual pilot, announcing estimated landing times to the cabin via a PA system.

Coming out of Alabama, the 2021 Honda Pilot adds a Special Edition and bundle, which comes with black 20-inch wheels, wireless phone charging, and a smart power tailgate. A 9-speed transmission, with paddle shifters and Idle Stop technology, is standard across the Pilot lineup, as well.

#15: Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is the only non-Alabama-built Honda in the top 15. Hailing from Marysville, OH, Accord and its Accord Hybrid brother are perhaps the most popular sedans in their respective classes.

The gas-powered Accord (LX and EX-L trims) returns 30 city/38 highway mpg and comes with, among other things, available wireless phone charging, a head-up display system, a one-touch power moonroof, and a convenient sliding center console storage compartment.

Accord Hybrid (EX and EX-L trims) get 48 mpg combined and includes Hybrid-exclusive features like a Power-Flow Monitor (keep track of your energy consumption in real time) and EV Mode (manually activate to drive on the hybrid battery and electric motor only).
