In 2019, the NSC estimated that vehicle collisions accounted for a total of 39,107 deaths in America; in 2020, the year of COVID, car crash fatalities climbed by about 7%, up to 42,060. This is the single biggest year-over-year spike of US automobile fatalities in almost a century, and that should concern drivers everywhere.
Details about Honda Sensing 360, the upcoming Omni-directional safety suite, and advanced driver-assistive system (ADAS), are scarce – it was just announced, after all. What we can expect is that Honda, leveraging the knowledge gained through its research and development of Level 3 automated driving tech, will incorporate some type of an autonomous (“self-driving”) system in Honda Sensing 360.
The new ADAS system will almost certainly improve upon the capabilities of Honda’s current Honda Sensing suite, which is utilized by nearly 6 million American Honda vehicles today, including the all-new 2022 Civic Hatchback and Sedan. Increased multi-directional sensory range, made possible by five millimeter-wave radar units surrounding each vehicle, should all but eliminate blind spots, as well.
The award-winning new airbag system, which Honda designed to mitigate head trauma and brain damage from frontal collision, is also expected to be included in every new Honda model.
While detailed info about Honda Sensing 360’s guts isn’t yet available, Honda has already got a timeline in the books.
2021: Honda is offering $2 million in financial support to organizations that are acting to improve young driver safety. Read more about their new initiative and how to apply.
2022: The global application of Honda Sensing 360 will start in China.
2030: Between 2022 and 2030, Honda will slowly integrate Honda Sensing 360 into all-new Honda models, until every Honda-badged vehicle comes standard with the advanced safety feature.
2030-2040: This follows along with Honda’s announced plans to emphasize electric vehicle sales in North America. By 2030, Honda is expecting 40% of its sales volume in Canada and the States to be from EVs. That grows to 80% in 2035, followed by 100% by 2040.
Honda is banking on its all-new e:Architecture EV platform, which they’ve already begun utilizing for several new and upcoming electric vehicles, to get them to the endzone. These all-new EVs, which will include two Honda electric SUVs, will be exclusively released in America and Canada first, with expansions to other markets scheduled over the following years.
If you’re still on the fence about buying a PHEV or EV, you might want to start adopting the EV lifestyle sooner rather than later – 2030 isn’t very far away. Read more about the benefits of switching to a plug-in electric vehicle.
2050: In addition to achieving complete carbon neutrality, Honda’s ultimate mission is to see zero car crash deaths globally by the year 2050.
